Lokta Paper

White and Natural
back in stock.

Lokta paper is handmade by local families in Nepal and is fair-trade classified. Made from the Daphne plants (Daphne bholua and Daphne papyracea) in Nepal's Himalayan forests. After harvesting, the plant completely regenerates to full maturity again within 4-5 years. If left to grow past maturity the Lokta Plant will not have any new growth, therefore, the harvesting process helps the forest continue to grow.

Lokta's paper durability & resistance to tearing, humidity, insects and mildew have traditionally made it the preferred choice for the recording of official government records & sacred religious texts. The earliest surviving lokta paper document appears in Nepal's National Archives (Kathmandu) the sacred Buddhist text, the Karanya Buha Sutra. The Karanya Buha Sutra was written in Lichchhavi script & block printed on lokta paper (estimated to be between 1,000 and 1,900 years old).

Once the lokta paper is produced it can last for some millennia (2000–3500 years).

ESCAMA STUDIO

Escama Studio's mission is to create innovative on-trend fashion accessories, while promoting sustainable development through trade.

The word 'Escama' means 'fish scales' in Portuguese; the name was chosen because of the flagship product -- crocheted accessories with post consumer pull tabs -- appear as if they're made from big metallic scales of a fish.

To achieve our unique aesthetic, the Escama Studio team adapted traditional Brazilian crochet work and imbued the handmade crafts with a modern design sense and new materials. With designs originating from both San Francisco and Brazil. The pop top bags are handmade in Brazil by artisan groups who are not just contract manufacturers, but an integral part of Escama Studio.

Escama Studio is a green company, a fair trade company and an ongoing experiment in sustainability. They measure their success by the strength of their partnerships with producers in underprivileged communities and by the sense of wonder that their products bring to fans worldwide. They are all sincerely grateful for every customer who loves these handbags and supports this venture.
